New books to get excited about!

Are you looking for an exciting new read? We've got plenty of new books in our young adult section including these new hit titles:

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is one of the most anticipated books of 2015. Tahir's debut has it all- action, adventure, romance, and fantasy. This book is a winner for fans of the Hunger Games. 

The Heir (The Selection #4) by Kiera Cass- You heard right, there's going to be a fourth book in The Selection Series! Cass' latest novel follows America and Maxon's daughter as she embarks on her own Selection. (Release date May 5, 2015).

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen- Dessen's latest novel is sure to win over her fans old and new. (Release date May 5, 2015).

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven- For fans of The Fault in Our Stars. Have the tissues ready- this book is a tear-jerker.

Teen Photography Contest

Just a reminder that the teen photography contest at the library will be continuing up until May 15^th at 5:00pm so you still have time to submit your entry! Contest rules can be found at the library, on the library website, Teen Blog, or Facebook page. 

Teen Resume & Job Searching Workshop

Need help perfecting your resume or tips on how to start writing one and activities to add to it? Looking for a summer job or volunteer experience? Stop by the Southwick Public Library on May 12 at 3:30pm to learn about resume writing and job searching. Open to any interested teens. Please call the library at 413-569-1221 ext. 3 for more information! The workshop will be led by a career counselor.

Teen Advisory Board

Stop by our next meeting of the Teen Advisory Board at the Southwick Public Library. Help us brainstorm events for teens, create book displays, write book reviews, plan community service projects, and more. The TAB counts for community service hours. Open to teens in grades 7-12. No registration required, just show up! Our next meeting is Monday, May 18^th at 3:00pm. This month we’ll talk about summer reading, events for June, and creating a new book display.

Teen Lounge

Join us for our monthly meeting of the Teen Lounge Wednesday, May 27^th at 2:30pm. We’ll have the Wii set up, games, and snacks.

Books to Movies...What's Coming Soon?

We all know that Mockingjay Part 2 is being released this year, but what other great YA books are being made into movies?

• Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (June, 2015)- Friends Greg and Earl are into making home-made movies (okay, maybe they're not the greatest movies, but it's the thought that counts, right?). When Greg's friend Rachel is diagnosed with cancer, the pair set out to make a movie just for her. This book will have you laughing the whole way through.

• Paper Towns (July, 2015)- John Green is at it again. Follow Quentin in his search for the mysterious Margo Roth Spiegelman when she suddenly disappears...and leaves a trail of clues for Quentin.

• The Scorch Trials (September, 2015)- Escaping the Maze was just the beginning. Thomas must survive the next Phase.

• The 5th Wave (January, 2016)- There were four waves, wiping out many of the people on earth. Now, in the 5th wave, Cassie must fight for survival against aliens out to destroy humanity.

• Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (March, 2016)- Jacob, exploring an island off Wales, finds what once was Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The children here were indeed peculiar. The highlight of the book is the collection of amazing and haunting photographs scattered throughout the pages. This book is a must-read before you see the movie (since it comes out next March, you have plenty of time to read it and even the sequel, Hollow City)!

Teen Photography Contest Information

Southwick Public Library Teen Photography Contest (7^th – 12^th Graders)

Contest Rules:

1.      You must be in grades 7-12 to submit a photograph.

                   

2.      Entries will be accepted now – May 15^th at 5:00pm. No late entries will be accepted. There is a limit of 1 entry per person.

3.      Entries must be submitted to the library by dropping off your entry or mailing to the Southwick Public Library at 95 Feeding Hills Road in Southwick, MA 01077

-Please include your name, address, telephone number, grade, and name of the picture on a paper separate to your photograph.

-Include only the name of the photograph on the back of the picture.

4.      Only one entry per person is allowed. By submitting your photograph, you acknowledge that the photograph is yours and was taken by you. Please submit only your own work.

5.      By entering, you give the library the right to display your photograph. The winning and runner-up’s photographs will be displayed in the Young Adult area. The winner will be announced by the end of May.

6.      If there is a person or any people in the photograph, you are responsible for getting their permission for this photograph to be used and/or displayed for this contest. A Model Release form is available at the Library or on the Teen Blogspot, Library Website, or the Facebook page for download. Photographs of people with no Model Release form cannot be accepted.

7.      The contest will be judged by a local photographer. The photographs will be judged on their creativity, originality, and style.

8.      The winning photographer will have their photo displayed and be awarded a prize. 

April Teen Events!

Teen Lounge

Join us on Tuesday, April 14^th  at 2:30 for the next Teen Lounge. We will have the Wii system set up and we will be having a cupcake decorating competition. 

Self-Publishing for Teens

Author Bailly Shannon Morse will be dropping by the library on April 15^th at 4:30pm to do a presentation on writing and publishing for teens. Morse has written several full-length novels, including two in her teen years. Come learn about the publishing industry and how to polish your writing skills. No registration required, just show up!

Teen Advisory Board

Our next meeting of the Teen Advisory Board will be Monday, April 27^th from 3-4pm. All are welcome- even if you haven’t come to a meeting before, feel free to join us! The Southwick Public Library Teen Advisory Board helps plan events for teens at the library, plan community service projects, create book displays, write book reviews, and more. Working with the Teen Advisory Board counts for community service hours if needed.

Teen Photography Contest

For the month of April, the Southwick Public Library will be hosting a teen photography contest. Submissions will be accepted April 1-April 30^th at 5:00pm. Please stop by the library or visit the teen Blogspot for contest rules. The contest will be judged by a local photographer and the winning submission and runners-up will be displayed in the Young Adult area. A prize will be awarded to the winner. ***More information to be posted soon!***
